Bisons impress at track and field championships

The University of Manitoba played host to the 2022 Canada West track and field championships this past weekend. The meet was a success for the Bisons — the women’s team impressed and the men’s team captured its first conference championship since 2009. 


Bison athletes garner all-star recognition

On March 3, the University of Manitoba men’s basketball team had its season cut short by the University of British Columbia Okanagan Heat in the first round of the Canada West basketball playoff tournament. Although the early elimination was disappointing, the announcement that Bison teammates James Wagner and Mason Kraus had been awarded for their exemplary play was a small consolation. 


Sporting organizations right to penalize Russia

By not treating these issues equally, sporting groups demonstrate the lack of concern they have for racialized people. Those who are complicit in murdering the innocent and pursuing wars of conquest have zero place in athletics. It is time that the Olympics, FIFA and the rest of the sporting world take a stand against large-scale violence. If nations forge a path of destruction and division, then they should not be permitted to participate in the unifying nature of sports.


Bisons’ basketball playoff aspirations cut short

The University of Manitoba Bisons basketball teams participated in the Canada West basketball playoff tournament this weekend. Unfortunately, both teams were ousted early, with the men’s team eliminated in the first round and the women’s team getting knocked out in the second. 


Huskies sweep Bisons

After going unbeaten against the Huskies all year, the University of Manitoba Bisons’ season ended prematurely as the women’s hockey team faced off against the University of Saskatchewan Huskies in a Canada West quarterfinal matchup. The Huskies upset the herd by winning two straight games to secure the best of three series and move on to the Canada West semifinals.


Women’s volleyball goes 1-1 with Bobcats

The University of Manitoba Bisons women’s volleyball team split a two-game series against the Brandon University (BU) Bobcats this weekend. BU won on Friday night, while the Bisons returned the favour Saturday in its final home game of the season. 


Huskies prey on Bisons

The University of Manitoba Bisons men’s and women’s basketball teams hosted the University of Saskatchewan Huskies in a two-game series this past weekend. Unfortunately for the herd, the Huskies were dominant, winning both games and spoiling the Bisons’ final home stand of the Canada West regular season. 


Diversity and inclusion in sport a priority for EDI head

The U of M co-sponsored two presentations held Jan. 28 THAT INCLUDED NOTABLE BLACK, INDIGENOUS AND PEOPLE OF COLOUR (BIPOC) GUEST SPEAKERS WHO BROKE DOWN THE CHALLENGES YOUNG CANADIANS FACE IN SPORT, THEIR OWN PERSONAL EXPERIENCES WITH OPPRESSIVE SYSTEMS AND THE DIFFERENT TACTICS THEY EMPLOY TO MAKE SPORT A SAFE PLACE FOR ALL CANADIANS. 


Bisons win Duckworth Challenge

The 2021-22 Duckworth Challenge came to a close last week as the University of Manitoba and University of Winnipeg’s volleyball teams faced off in the final two games of the competition. The Bisons men’s team won its game, while the women’s team lost. With the series scored 3-2 for the U of M, the Bisons secured its first Duckworth Challenge title since 2017.
