City project explores alternative citizen crisis response

The City of Winnipeg, Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) and Shared Health’s Crisis Response Centre (CRC) announced a pilot project aimed at supporting people experiencing mental health crises in a Nov. 29 PRESS RELEASE. The Alternative Response to Citizens in Crisis (ARCC) pilot project aims to help stabilize people in crisis and support individuals in chronic crisis. The ARCC will provide mental health resources to stabilize its users in the moment and assist them in managing their mental health in the long term.


Bisons volleyball closes out fall semester

The University of Manitoba Bisons volleyball teams played their last series before the winter break at Investors Group Athletic Centre this weekend. The women’s team faced off against the University of Regina Cougars, while the men’s team played its crosstown rivals — the University of Winnipeg Wesmen — with both teams winning and losing a game apiece.


Bisons men’s basketball recap

The Bisons men’s basketball team is at the halfway point of its season after some impressive play. The team is first in the east division with a 5-3 record and looks to stay in that spot for the rest of the season. The squad went in to the weekend with a 5-1 record before dropping back-to-back games to the University of Saskatchewan Huskies.



UMFA strike ends

The University of Manitoba and the University of Manitoba Faculty Association (UMFA) have reached an agreement to enter into binding arbitration, ending a strike that has lasted over a month.


U of M should accommodate hybrid classes

Mixed emotions struck University of Manitoba students this week after the administration announced the campus will open its doors to in-person classes again for the first time in years. In a frenzy of excitement, I reminisced about the last time I was on a full campus — in regular fashion, I was getting a beer with friends at the Daily Bread Cafe when I read campus was closing due a new virus health experts were calling SARS-CoV-2. It would be open again in a couple weeks, I reassured myself. Now, here we are, a couple years later.

Research begins at the Churchill Marine Observatory

The new Churchill Marine Observatory (CMO) began operations last week, with the first research project underway after over 10 years of development. The CMO is led by a team of University of Manitoba researchers including scientific director David Barber, board of directors chair Gary Stern and chief scientists Feiyue Wang and C.J. Mundy.
