Losers of eight of its last nine games, the U of M Bisons women’s hockey team did its best John Wick impression over the weekend, telling the rest of Canada West, “Yeah, I’m thinking I’m back.”
Yet, with 17 goals through 15 games, the club is on pace for 29 on the season. This would put the Bisons last among teams in the conference last season.
The Bisons were led by goaltender Tyler Brown in a game-one loss, and a three-goal second period propelled the herd to a victory over the Golden Bears in game two.
After making controversial comments during his Coach’s Corner segment on Hockey Night in Canada Nov. 9, Don Cherry was relieved of his position.
Such was the case on the weekend, as after its fifth straight goalless loss Friday, the U of M Bisons women’s hockey team found the back of the net Saturday to halt the losing skid at six.
The U of M Bisons men’s hockey team and women’s volleyball team crossed the provincial border to face the University of Regina Cougars and came back with some wins in the standings.
In a battle for second last in the conference, the herd hosted the University of Regina Cougars for a two-game set. Manitoba failed to score in either contest and was swept at home.With the loss, Manitoba — losers of five straight — now sits last in the conference with seven points through 10 games.
Currently last in the conference, just behind the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds, at 66.7 per cent, the Bisons have given up 13 goals on 39 short-handed situations. This does not need to be the case, as the herd has all the tools necessary for a strong penalty-kill, preventing goals against and turning the tide in games. It all comes down to how the kill is deployed.
