Solidarity with what?

The recent downing of a Russian Su-24 jet by Turkish forces over Syria is the first time a NATO member has destroyed a Russian aircraft since the 1950s. Given the complex, fractious conflict that is the Syrian civil war, such a move could have proved catastrophic. This is especially true considering the authoritarian and uncompromising nature of both Russia’s Vladimir Putin and Turkey’s Recep Erdoğan, neither of whom is keen to appear weak.

Getting defensive

The University of Manitoba Bisons men’s basketball team completed their first sweep of the season last weekend, dominating the visiting Alberta Golden Bears defensively with scores of 90-68 on Friday and 74-61 on Saturday.


Huskies take bite of Bisons

This past weekend, the University of Manitoba Bisons men’s hockey team welcomed Canada West’s top team, the Saskatchewan Huskies, into town. The Huskies swept the weekend series, taking Friday’s game by a score of 6-3 as well as Saturday’s rematch, 4-3.


One streak ends, another begins

The University of Manitoba Bisons women’s hockey team had their five-game winning streak snapped on Friday night by the Saskatchewan Huskies in double overtime, but they are heading home on a positive note.


A weekend to forget

The University of Manitoba Bisons men’s and women’s volleyball teams both ventured to Edmonton this past weekend to take on the University of Alberta. Neither squad was able to pick up a win, as the men’s undefeated run was snapped, while the women’s losing streak was extended to four games.


Ready for the big leagues

There is little doubt in most people’s minds that the Winnipeg Jets have a bright future with a number of high-level prospects coming through the system. With players such as Michael Frolík, Lee Stempniak, and Jiří Tlustý leaving during the offseason, new players have an opportunity to try and crack the lineup.


UMSU approves strategic plan, $64 fee increase

The University of Manitoba Students’ Union (UMSU) has approved an omnibus motion which includes plans for several new projects, a restructuring of fees, as well as an increase to student fees of $32 per semester to pay for the projects.
