The Bison golf team doesn’t seem to receive the same attention the football or hockey teams get, but that hasn’t affected the team’s performance so far this season.
Since the fall schedule started in September, the boys have finished first overall in team play in three of five tournaments and did not have a finish out of the top three throughout the entire month of September.
Josh Wytinck has been instrumental in the team’s success, starting the season by winning back-to-back individual titles at the Concordia Invitational and Augsburg College Fall Invitational.
The Manitoban got to speak with the Glenboro, Man. native and asked some hard-hitting questions:
The Manitoban: What sports did you play growing up?
Josh Wytinck: In high school I played volleyball and badminton. I did track and field, played hockey and golf; pretty much any sport they offered in high school, I played.
M: How long have you been playing golf?
JW: Since I was five, so around 15 years.
M: Who got you into the sport?
JW: My father and grandfather back home.
M: Who is your favourite golfer currently playing in the PGA?
JW: Currently? Pretty tough decision — I don’t know if I really have one, but if I had to pick, I like Ernie Els’s swing. He’s a little older now, but he’s still good.
M: What’s your academic focus at university?
JW: I’m finishing up an arts degree before taking education.
M: What are your plans for after school?
JW: Hoping to become a teacher and maybe play golf professionally for a bit, but we’ll see how it goes.
M: If you could form a golf foursome, made up of anyone of your choosing, who would you play a round with?
JW: Arnold Palmer, Tiger Woods, myself and my grandfather.
M: Speaking of Tiger Woods, what is your opinion on his current slump? Do you think he will ever return to peak form?
JW: That’s tough to say. I think he’ll definitely win some more, but he’ll never be the same again I don’t think. Then again, he might not win again by the looks of it, but he could still tear it up again.
M: If you could be any animal, which would you be?
JW: A tiger. They’re my favourite animal.
M: If you could play mini-golf with any celebrity, who would it be?
JW: Jennifer Aniston.
