There was a resounding call of “Timber” over the weekend as the University of Manitoba Bisons basketball clubs cut down the visiting University of the Fraser Valley Cascades. The men’s club came away with the weekend sweep, while the women earned a split.
Taken second overall in the 2018 WHL bantam draft, expectations were high for the local blueliner, and early on he is having an exceptional season.
Losers of eight of its last nine games, the U of M Bisons women’s hockey team did its best John Wick impression over the weekend, telling the rest of Canada West, “Yeah, I’m thinking I’m back.”
Yet, with 17 goals through 15 games, the club is on pace for 29 on the season. This would put the Bisons last among teams in the conference last season.
With the Duckworth Challenge settled, the U of M Bisons and University of Winnipeg Wesmen still had conference obligations to fulfill over the weekend.
Despite entering the week’s action up 1-0 thanks to a win by women’s soccer on Oct. 10, the U of M Bisons let the U of W Wesmen come back to win the challenge for the third straight year.
The Bisons were led by goaltender Tyler Brown in a game-one loss, and a three-goal second period propelled the herd to a victory over the Golden Bears in game two.
Such was the case on the weekend, as after its fifth straight goalless loss Friday, the U of M Bisons women’s hockey team found the back of the net Saturday to halt the losing skid at six.
The U of M Bisons men’s hockey team and women’s volleyball team crossed the provincial border to face the University of Regina Cougars and came back with some wins in the standings.
