From cleanup to community care

UMSocialists organize cleanup and expand mutual aid initiative

UMSocialists hosted a campus cleanup on Oct. 17, bringing volunteers together to collect litter and contribute to a cleaner campus.

Hunter Reynolds, UMSocialists president, said, “We meet regularly as a club to talk about what we can do to directly benefit the community, whether that be on campus or in Winnipeg.”

“The weather forced us to reschedule, but it still went really well,” he added.

Participants spent two hours collecting approximately 10 bags of trash from across campus. The cleanup concluded with a pizza gathering, giving participants, including new members, an opportunity to connect with one another.

“Overall, I think it’s just a very pro-social thing. The volunteers get the chance to meet with like-minded people and everyone gets to benefit from a cleaner campus,” Reynolds said.

Reynolds said the club plans to do more mutual aid by working with community organizations such as Mama Bear Clan or Food Not Bombs to provide direct support to people in need.

UMSocialists is also currently collecting donations for the Mama Bear Clan Donation Drive in collaboration with the U of M Indigenous Students’ Association (UMISA) as well as Queer Student Family (QSF).

The donation drive will run until Oct. 27 and will be accepting hygiene products, individually wrapped food and grocery bags. They will be collected in the Arts, QSF and UMISA lounges.

On Nov. 1, UMSocialists will join Mama Bear Clan to distribute collected items to local communities. The club is now looking for volunteers to help distribute the items. Interested parties can reach out to @umsocialists on Instagram.

Reynolds encouraged students to stay informed about the club’s upcoming events and initiatives.
