Campus crime statistics gathered by the University of Manitoba security services are now available for the months of August and September. The PDF presentations were published Nov. 1 on the security services page of the U of M website. 

Gordon Perrier, director of campus security, said the statistics only include incidents reported to the department. Numbers may change by the end of the year depending on additional information that security services receives. He said when looking at the statistics, it is important to remember that not all crime committed is reported. Some is not noticed at all. 

Bike thefts continue to be the highest incidence of crime on campus. 

August 

There were 30 total incidents reported in August 2023 on the Fort Garry campus and seven on the Bannatyne campus. 

There were eight bike thefts or attempted bike thefts, one moped theft, incidents of harassment and motor vehicle and public order violations. There was one incident of hate propaganda and one indecent sexual act reported during the month of August. 

Campus security received and responded to 55 calls about suspicious people or vehicles and six medical emergencies. 

September 

A total of 36 incidents at the Fort Garry campus and three at the Bannatyne campus were reported in September 2023. 

There were 12 bike thefts in September. Three vehicles were vandalized and there was one instance of breaking and entering. 

In addition, campus security responded to 43 calls of suspicious activity and 12 medical emergencies.
