Trendsetters

This week we look at some of the most popular picks of the hockey pool.

In the First Line category, popular pick Alexander Ovechkin ran away with the lead as nearly 47 per cent of all entrants selected the high flying Russian to lead their team. Tampa Bay standout Steven Stamkos leads all others in this category but was selected by less than seven per cent of all entrants. Sidney Crosby and Henrik Sedin rounded out the top three of the first-line selections at 17 per cent and 10 per cent, respectively.

Chicago winger Patrick Kane led all second-line players with 28 per cent of the votes, while Columbus’ Rick Nash was the majority favoured third-line pick with 36 per cent of all hockey pool selections.

The Fourth Line category, largely consisting of rookie or sophomore skaters, was a much closer race. Wayne Simmonds led all selections with 18 per cent of all fourth-line votes, followed closely by Taylor Hall, with 16.5 per cent, and Kris Versteeg, with 13 per cent.

In the category of defence, Mike Green was far and away the favourite with 47 per cent of first-line defensive pairing selections. Surprisingly, early season standouts Duncan Keith (13 total points in 20 games) and Nicklas Lidstrom (17 total points in 15 games) combined comprised only 13 per cent of the total first-line defence votes.

Toronto captain Dion Phaneuf took the majority of second-line defence votes with 31 per cent, while Brent Seabrook led all third-line defence selections by the same number.

Steve Downie led all players in the Grinder category and it appears rightly so. In 14 games this season Downie has accumulated eight points and 64 total penalty minutes — good enough to led all other players in this category.

The Enforcer category of the hockey pool came down to a two horse race between Milan Lucic, who took 27 per cent of all votes, and Daniel Carcillo, who took 26 per cent.

Wojtek Wolski was the clear favourite in the Extra Man category, with 22 per cent of all selections, although the Phoenix forward hasn’t been the most productive selection. That honour belongs to Brandon Dubinsky, who garnered just over nine per cent of Extra Man selections.

In the category of Starting Goaltenders, Roberto Luongo led all netminders with 31 per cent of all selections, followed closely by Ryan Miller with 28 per cent and Martin Brodeur with 26 per cent.

Finally, Jimmy Howard led all goaltenders in the Backup Goalie category with 20 per cent of all votes. St. Louis Blues netminder Jaroslav Halak leads all goaltenders in fantasy point value and was selected by 13 per cent of all hockey pool entrants.
