Bison Briefs

Hockey
The men’s and women’s Bison hockey teams played non-conference games over the past weekend in preparation for the regular season, which begins on Sept. 30 for the men and Oct. 14 for the women.

The men’s team played two games against the Mount Royal University Cougars over the weekend. In the first game, played Friday night, the Bisons won 3-1, following up with a 5-4 shootout loss on Saturday afternoon.

The women’s team was on the road, playing the Regina Rams in Dauphin on Friday. In what was essentially neutral territory, the Bisons lost 2-1.

Golf
On the weekend of Sept. 10-11, Josh Wytinck and the rest of the Bison golf team were in Ham Lake, Minn. for the 2011 Augsburg College Fall Invitational tournament at Majestic Oaks Golf Course. Wytinck followed up his impressive performance the previous week with his second individual title of the 2011 golf season, shooting a score of 141 (72-63) for a 3-under-par final result and a two-stroke victory. The Bison team, as a whole, finished the tournament in second place out of the 21 teams competing, with an overall score of 594 (295-299) and +18 on the par 72 course.

To go with his two consecutive individual tournament wins, Wytinck also earned his second straight Smitty’s Bisons Sports Male Athlete of the Week for his performance.

Soccer
Still looking for their first win of the 2011 campaign, the Bison women’s soccer team hit the road for their first road game of the season as they travelled to Langley, B.C. to take on the No. 9 ranked Trinity Western University (TWU) Spartans.

The Bisons were outshot by their opponent for most of the match, as they were only able to get five shots on goal to the Spartan’s 14. TWU was first on the scoreboard, scoring on a penalty shot deflection and took a 1-0 lead into the second half. The Spartans would extend their lead to two before the Bisons responded, as Carrie Nash scored the lone Bison goal of the night in the 58th minute.

Unfortunately, it was the Spartans’ night as they scored twice more for the 4-1 victory. The Bisons next game is on Sept. 24 on the road against Regina.
