Hockey

The men’s hockey team began their post-season this past weekend, taking on the CIS third-ranked Alberta Golden Bears in a best-of-three conference semi-final matchup.

On Friday, the Bisons would lose their opening game to the Golden Bears by a score of 4-0. Manitoba was down by three in the third, nearly tied with Alberta in shots, but could not capitalize on three consecutive power play opportunities in the final frame. The following day, the Bisons managed to keep the score much closer but ultimately were unable to avoid a 2-1 Alberta victory. With the win, the Golden Bears take the series 2-0 and advance to the conference finals were they will play [Huskies or Dinos] for the Canada West title.

Manitoba has not defeated Alberta in a men’s hockey playoff series since the 1970-71 season, dating back 40 years in total. The Golden Bears win takes the overall series record to 1-8 in favour of Alberta.

Volleyball

Earlier this month, Bison Ashley Voth was named as one of the 2010-11 CIS Women’s Volleyball First Team All-Canadians. In 2010-11, Voth was first in CIS and Canada West hitting percentage (.403) and tied for fifth in conference in blocks per game (1.0).

First year Bisons Rachel Cockrell and Chris Komishon were also named to their respective 2010-11 CIS All-Rookie Teams. Komishon was also selected as the 2010-11 Canada West Rookie of the Year.
