Manitoban hockey pool

Greetings hockey fans! Whether you’ve officially entered the 2010-11 Manitoban Hockey Pool or just interested in keeping up with the goings on of the NHL regular season, the Manitoban has you covered. Look for weekly updates in print or online at themanitoban.com to keep abreast of key injuries, major storylines and interesting stats. Also, check online for the full list of hockey pool team standings.

Top performers

After a month of regular season NHL hockey, Tampa Bay’s Steven Stamkos is leading all players with 22 points in 13 games. Many of the usual suspects are currently rounding out the scoring race but a few forwards have succeeded all pre-season expectations.

Dallas’ Brad Richards, who has 18 points in 13 games, has been playing like an elite scorer and if he can keep up this unrelenting pace he will be poised to achieve the first 100-point season of his career.

In New York, center Brandon Dubinsky seems to have taken a leap forward in development. The young forward has 10 goals in 14 total games. Last year it took 36 games before Dubinsky netted his tenth of the season.

In ten games with St. Louis so far this season Jaroslav Halak has lived up to the hype, looking all the goalie that Montreal fans witnessed during last year’s playoff run. Halak has three shutouts and eight wins with the Blues.

Player storylines

Last year goaltenders Semyon Varlamov and Tuukka Rask both enjoyed the majority of the starts for the Washington Capitals and the Boston Bruins. Injuries and the stellar play of others, however, has severely limited the playing time of both netminders.

Anyone who picked either of these two goalies for their hockey pool is hurting badly right about now as not only are these two not getting any wins, they’re barely playing any games.

Phoenix forward Wojtek Wolski and Minnesota winger Martin Havlat both scored their first goals of the season this past week. Both Wolski and Havlat are making well over $3.5 million this season but had failed to register a goal in almost a month’s worth of hockey.

Movember watch

For those unaware, Movember is a movement specific to November in which men grow mustaches in attempt to generate prostate cancer awareness. Look for the following NHL players to be sporting the ’stache over the next month:

Sam Gagner, Gilbert Brule, George Parros, Nick Schultz, Corey Perry, Ryan Getzlaf, Teemu Selanne, Saku Koivu, Patrice Bergeron, Nathan Horton, Milan Lucic, Mark Giordano, Curtis Glencross, Jarome Iginla, Ian White, Erik Karlsson, Karl Alzner, John Carlson, Claude Giroux, Scott Hartnell, Mike Richards, Dan Carcillo and James van Riemsdyk.
