The Bisons women’s basketball team played against the Lakehead Thunderwolves on Saturday, Oct. 3 and Sunday, Oct. 4. The game on Saturday was their second game of the season and it was nothing short of astonishing after half-time.
In the first quarter, the herd took the lead and finished 19-13. In the second quarter, the Thunderwolves outscored the herd to bring the score to 30-29, giving the herd a one-point lead.
This is where the game totally changed. In the first and second quarters, both teams had a similar frequency of scoring. But in the third quarter, the Bisons scored 26 points, whereas the Thunderwolves struggled terribly and ended up scoring only three points. Izzi Fust and Anna Miko both individually outscored the Thunderwolves in this quarter with five and eight points, respectively.
The Bisons proved to be of a different weight class, repeating similar domination in the fourth quarter by scoring 13 points against the Thunderwolves’ two.
The game ended 69-34, with an insane gap of 35 points.
Bisons women’s basketball head coach Michele Sung said that after the first half, they made a few individual defensive adjustments that were executed well.
Sung credited the brilliant transitions that the squad made in the half-court, which according to her, relieved pressure on the defence.
Coach Sung took the opportunity to share that in the off-season they had focused on building momentum from the defence.
Off-season is also the time when the coaches usually recruit new faces for the squad. Sung commented, “We have two-first years from high school in Manitoba, Kiley and Emilie, and then the first-year from Spain, Sonia.”
Although these three recruits did not have a defining impact on this game, it will be interesting to watch their journey with the Bisons.
Looking at individual performances for the Bisons in the game, Fust scored 20 points and Miko scored 14.
On Sunday, the herd won the game 79-48.
The Bisons will next face their local rivals, the Winnipeg Wesmen, on Oct. 30 at 6 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre.
