UMSU’s vice-president external affairs Aiden Peters resigned from his position effective Sept. 18, leaving the executive position vacant.
Heaven Kaur, UMSU president, confirmed Peters’s resignation in an email to the Manitoban.
“Aiden was not removed from his position with UMSU,” Kaur said. “He resigned from his role as vice-president external affairs, effective Sept. 18, 2026.”
Kaur said UMSU would not comment further on the circumstances surrounding Peters’s resignation out of respect for his privacy.
“I thank Aiden for his contributions to UMSU during his time in the role and wish him all the best moving forward,” she said.
Peters was elected vice-president external affairs in the 2026 UMSU general election and began his term in May.
The vacancy marks the second consecutive academic year in which UMSU’s vice-president external affairs position has become vacant before the end of its term.
In November 2025, then-vice-president external affairs Jared Ramos Murphy was removed from office following a decision by UMSU’s board of directors. His responsibilities were assumed by then-UMSU president Prabhnoor Singh.
The vice-president external affairs is responsible for representing UMSU to external organizations and different levels of government. The portfolio includes advocacy on issues affecting students, including government policy and public transit.
It remains unclear who will assume Peters’s responsibilities or whether UMSU will hold a by-election to fill the vacant position.
