Bison Briefs

It was a busy weekend for Bison sports as everyone but the women’s hockey team was on the road. Here’s your recap of the past weekend’s road games:

Basketball

The Bison men couldn’t turn things around on the road. The team extended their losing streak to six, with a 62-51 loss to Victoria, and a 65-67 loss to UBC. Mike Holloway led Manitoba in scoring against Victoria with 12 points, while Andre Arruda had a team-high of 18 points against UBC. Currently at 1-7, the Bisons will head into winter break after a pair of games against the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon.

The Bison women also had some trouble on the road, dropping their games against Victoria 59-43 and UBC 62-45. Freshman guard Sheree Carmona-Galdamez was the top performer, scoring 26 total points over the two games. The losses drop the women’s record to 3-5 as they also travel to Saskatoon next weekend.

Volleyball

It was a weekend of redemption for the Manitoba men’s volleyball team. They bounced back from a 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 25-16)  loss to Alberta on Friday, with a thrilling victory in the fifth set on Saturday. After dropping the first set Saturday, the Bisons won the next two 25-11 and 25-22. The Golden Bears forced a fifth set, which the Bisons won 18-16.

Adam DeJonckheere and Devren Dear led the Bisons offensive with 16 and 15 kills respectively. Now 5-5, the Bisons host the conference leading Trinity Western to wrap up the first half of the season.

The women’s volleyball also split their series on the road against Alberta. After leading the Pandas two sets to one, Manitoba could not close out the match in the fourth. Alberta jumped out early in the fifth set, and held on for the victory 3-2 (25-20, 15-25, 22-25, 25-20, 15-7).

The Bisons did what they had hoped to do the night prior, winning in four sets 3-1 (21-25, 25-15, 25-21, 25-22). Rachel Cockrell and Taylor Pischke led Manitoba with 32 and 33 kills respectively over the weekend. Now at 6-4 on the season, the Bisons will host Trinity Western Spartans to close out the fall portion.

Hockey

After getting out to a rough start this season, the Bison men’s hockey team is riding a four-game winning streak after sweeping the UBC Thunderbirds on the road. Eleven different Bison players scored this weekend. Manitoba won 6-3 on Friday and 6-4 on Saturday. The wins boost the team’s record to 6-8, and will hopefully extend their winning streak against the high-flying Alberta Golden Bears, who are 13-1-0 on the season.
