Crime Beat

The first month of school appeared to keep Security Services on their feet.
Seven reports of theft came to the attention of Security Services over the month. One involved a locker break-in, while five others involved personal items that were left unattended.

Community constable Doug Heinrichs stressed students and staff should be careful to never leave items unsecure.

“Crimes of opportunity like this can happen in as little as 30 seconds. Items such as laptops, backpacks containing valuables and even wallets should never be left alone even for a brief period of time,” he said.

Another theft involved security staff at the U of M bookstore catching a shoplifter.
During September, four individuals were caught with forged or altered permits or dispenser tickets.

“These are temporary permits or tickets where someone has tried to alter the date or time on the permit,” Heinrichs explained.

“In each case, the accused face internal discipline including fines under the university parking regulations.”

There were three reports of cars being damaged in campus parking lots. In each case, the car appeared to be hit by another vehicle.

Heinrichs noted that there are many more cars in the university parking lots during the beginning of the fall semester, “which means a lot of chances for accidents.”
“Please ensure that proper care is taken when operating a vehicle throughout campus lots and roadways.”

In addition, there were five alcohol-related incidents that Security Services officers attended to.

“In one serious case, a female student required medical treatment due to her extreme level of intoxication,” Heinrichs explained.

In another two incidents, Security Services offices apprehended intoxicated persons attempting to drive their cars.

“One individual was given the opportunity to find another ride home, while another found himself detained under the Intoxicated Persons Detention Act and turned over to Winnipeg Police Service,” Heinrichs said.

In other less serious incidences, individuals who were not residence students were apprehended after causing a disturbance in Pembina Hall. Each individual was banned from residence buildings on campus.
