Undressing the business professional

Oh summer! With the temperature finally staying in the double digits for longer than a few hours, one can finally revel in the joy of summer fashion. How easy is it to break out the short shorts, flip-flops and Wayfarers?

One topic that causes some confusion, and that this writer has recently encountered, is what to wear to work — or better yet, an interview? How can you rock the summer 2011 trends all the while staying business professional? Here are a few of the hottest trends for this summer and some tips on how to make them work for, well, work.

Retro
The ’60s and ’70s trends have reappeared in designer lines for the past few years, and with the popularity of shows like Mad Men, it looks like they are here to stay. However, it’s a fine line between retro chic and costume-y. One way to modernize this trend is pairing contemporary pieces with vintage looks. Think “boyfriend cardigan” over a vintage full-skirt dress.

Bright colours
Bright colours are everywhere this season, but showing up to an interview in a fluorescent orange maxi dress might not be the best idea. Instead, try using bright colours when accessorizing — think earrings, nail polish, bags — or if you’re feeling a little braver, try choosing one brightly coloured piece and pairing it with more understated looks. For example, wear a bright green cardigan over a white blouse and khaki Bermuda shorts.

All-white outfits
Similarly to bright colours, this trend is harder to pull off in a work environment, especially given that the more affordable white ensembles tend to be a little see-through. Instead, opt for one standout piece. For example, a white flowy blouse or pencil skirt paired with darker shades or pastels.

Lace and crochet
This trend was really prominent last summer and seems to have stuck around for this year. Lace is beautiful, but if worn incorrectly can easily cross over into looking tacky. Fortunately, many designers have created great lace and crochet accessories, like handbags, earrings and pendants that allow you to wear the trend risk-free. If you really have your heart set on rocking this trend this summer, try full fabric pieces with lace overlay or maybe a flowy lace top over a camisole. Just make sure the underwear stays out of sight.

Bold prints
This is another trend that can easily fall out of the business attire category. For animal prints, stick to more monochromatic or understated pieces, or opt for neutral outfits with animal print accessories to be sure you don’t over do it. Floral and geometric prints are a little easier to pull off in the office atmosphere. With dresses, opt for clean lines as floral patterns are loud enough. With individual pieces, you can be a little bit more whimsical when it comes to shapes as long as they’re paired with neutral pieces.

Military
While camouflage and Dr. Martens may not go over so well at the office, there are a few ways to make the military trend work. A modern trench coat is a great way to emphasize the silhouette all while staying warm on those rainy days. Also, olive, beige and khaki are all great neutral colours to pair with more bold pieces and won’t leave you looking like you’re waiting to be deployed. When accessorizing, opt for brass bangles and earrings to complete this look.

Architectural clothing
Finally, a trend that works perfectly for the work environment! This throwback to the ’80s is great for defining the silhouette. Well-tailored blazers with wearable shoulder pads work wonderfully for the office and easily transfer into eveningwear. Stiff belts also help define your waist.

Hopefully by examining the current trends, the term business professional has been undressed and its meaning exposed. Now its time to make these trends work for you while you go to work.
