Midseason award predictions

With the NHL regular season now halfway complete, we take a look at the early award candidates.

Hart Memorial Trophy (most valuable player)

Sidney Crosby — there are a handful of players worthy of MVP recognition, but without Crosby the Penguins wouldn’t be anywhere near the top of the Eastern Conference standings.

Vezina Trophy (outstanding goaltender)

Tim Thomas — Thomas has been the most valuable player on the Bruins team this year, already surpassing his Vezina performance from two years ago.

Frank J. Selke Trophy (outstanding defensive forward)

Pavel Datsyuk — Datsyuk seems to be playing with more passion this year. His offensive skills are unreal, but he is so smart defensively that he’s almost never a liability. Hard to knock a guy who plays so well on both sides of the puck.

James Norris Trophy (outstanding defenceman)

Nicklas Lidstrom — Kris Letang and Dustin Byfuglien may be dazzling audiences with their offensive output, but Lidstrom is putting up the same sterling numbers all the while playing possibly the smartest, most efficient defensive game on ice this year. There is a reason analysts say Lidstrom is one of the best to ever play the game.

Lady Byng Trophy (player that displays sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct)

Loui Eriksson — this year Eriksson began to emerge as one of the NHL’s top tier scoring threats, tallying 42 points by the midway point of the season. The native Swede has done this all while accumulating a paltry four penalty minutes in 40 total games.

Calder Memorial Trophy (award for outstanding rookie)

Logan Couture — Couture had the benefit of playing more than a dozen games last year without earning full rookie status. This may be one of the tightest races come season’s end, but as of right now the San Jose forward is on pace to score just under 40 goals in his first full year in the NHL.

Jack Adams Award (award for outstanding coach)

Mike Babcock — despite tremendous success both in the regular season and in the playoffs, Babcock is yet to win his first coach-of-the-year award. This year he seems to have all of Detroit’s key players motivated and poised to claim yet another Presidents’ Trophy.

Presidents’ Trophy (best team regular season record)

Detroit Red Wings — When Lidstrom, Datsyuk and Zetterberg are firing on all cylinders, they’re as good as any other threesome in the league. This year Detroit has their all-star talent complimented by a bona fide number one goaltender in Jimmy Howard.

Prince of Wales Trophy (Eastern Conference Championship)

Pittsburgh — as long as Crosby, Malkin and Fleury are all playing up to their potential they’ll have both the talent and the experience to guide them into the later rounds of the playoffs.

Clarence S. Campbell Bowl (Western Conference Championship)

Vancouver — the Canucks have played the ugly stepchild of the West for too long. Their star players are beginning to peak, and in this salary cap era, many of them realize their window of opportunity will pass by if they don’t win when it really counts. An (unlikely) early playoff exit this year would mean Vancouver becomes the new San Jose of the playoffs; always a favourite, never a winner.

Stanley Cup (NHL Championship)

Vancouver Canucks — the talent is there; the team as a whole, however, will need to perform and execute. Vancouver’s strength is in their depth. To secure a spot in the finals the team will have to rely on high offensive output rather than the goaltending prowess of Roberto Luongo.

Maurice Richard Trophy (league goal scoring leader)

Steven Stamkos, Sidney Crosby — both Crosby and Stamkos are miles ahead of all others in both points and goal scoring. For goals, let’s go for a second consecutive tie for the Richard Trophy.

Art Ross trophy (league points scored leader)

Sidney Crosby — as long as he keeps the pace he’s established in the first half of the season, this race isn’t even close.
