From 2003-07 Mike Hellyer played for Prince Albert of the WHL, where he accumulated a total of 143 points in 262 regular season games. Last year Hellyer led Manitoba with 11 goals and 24 points in 28 regular season games. In his three full seasons since joining the Bisons, Hellyer has tallied 64 points in 84 conference games.

In early October Hellyer was named captain of the Bisons for the first time in his CIS career, after having spent the 2009-10 conference campaign as one of Manitoba’s alternate captains.

The Manitoban: What is your most cherished Bison Sport memory?

Mike Hellyer: Probably winning the tournament at Thunder Bay a couple years ago; we were down I think four goals and we came back and won in overtime. Either that or the McGill game last year, same scenario where we were down three goals with ten minutes to go and we came back to win it.

M: What sports did you play growing up?

MH: Baseball and golf. I spent the majority of my time at the lake — so water sports, wakeboarding, all that kind of stuff.

M: Who was your childhood sports idol?

MH: I was a Peter Forsberg fan.

M: What sports do you watch/follow now?

MH: I’ll pretty much watch any sport that’s out there. If there’s sports on TV I’ll throw it on, so it’s not so much a question of what but when.

M: Academically, your current focus of study is . . .

MH: My major is kinesiology and my minor is psychology.

M: My post-university plans are . . .

MH: I want to play hockey as long as I can, no matter where it is. As long as it’s practical and reasonable, I want to play. Other than that I’d like to work with people. I’m getting a kinesiology degree so somewhere in the biomechanics field would be ideal for me.

M: Favourite book and/or movie?

MH: I just started the Theo Fleury book and it’s pretty interesting. I kind of want to get into that a bit more.

M: If you were a type of animal, which animal would you be and why?

MH: Probably a monkey or an ape so I could grow a beard in a day.

M: If I could play mini-golf with anyone in the world it would be . . .

MH: Wayne Gretzky.
