The smile-inducing rhetorical comment editor!

I would just like to point out some minor errors in Michael Silicz's article “Just another day at the office” debasing the Day of Action; a debasement which I encourage. This does seem slightly pointless as I'm sure Johnny Sopotiuk is also is sitting at his desk writing a similar response to justify the existence of his useless student organization. Mike asks several smile-inducing rhetorical questions but also why UMSU doesn't protest outside our admin. building. If you note the picture above the article, it says “Rally... outside U.Centre.” which would put them “10 steps or so” from the admin. building. Mike also wonders why Johnny (and his team that represents less than 5 per cent of the student body) go to the Legislature at all. Two reasons come to mind: first, the U of M, like most universities in this fair country of ours, are heavily funded by the government and can be argued as being crown corporations. So UMSU’s logic may be that they're going to the top to plead their case. Secondly, unlike most university student bodies, UMSU was created under Manitoban Legislation nearly a century ago, so perhaps they feel they feel a mandate to report to the body which created them. As for these protest's achievements in the last decade: we have had a tuition freeze for a decade. I'm not naïve enough to believe that there's a direct correlation, but it could have had an affect (though I seriously doubt it.) Now don’t get me wrong, I think this protest is silly and pointless just like Mr. Silicz does. I feel that post-secondary education isn't a right nor a privilege but rather a responsibility which you need to work at and pay for. If you're smart enough to get a degree, you should be doing that to make your country, world and species better and stronger. Mike Madziar is proudly part of a student organization that does not affiliate with UMSU in any way. He also would like his UMSU fees refunded. If done, he'll agree to stop attending UMSU events just to take free food.
