Toban Talkback
Kindergarten edition
To see if we’ve changed since our kindergarten days, we put University of Manitoba students head-to-head with first-graders: have we grown wiser or just older? You be the judge.
John Schellenberg, fourth-year engineering
vs.
Madison, who doesn’t like the cleanup song
What happens when you do something bad?
John: Sometimes something, sometimes nothing.
Madison: You get detention?
When should you say you’re sorry?
John: When you’ve done something bad.
Madison: When somebody’s feeling like you did something like you weren’t supposed to.
If you had a cookie, would you give me half?
John: Yeah.
Madison: Okay.
Chantal Chabbert, second-year arts
vs.
David, who wants to be an astronaut
What are some bad things to do?
Chantal: Deceiving, lying, stealing . . .
David: Being bad and breakin’ rules.
What happens when you do something bad?
Chantal: There should be consequences.
David: One kid ate Playdoh and he got in trouble . . . it was yummy, I guess.
What have you learned from school so far?
Chantal: That you have to put in effort if you want to succeed.
David: I dunno.
Luiz Freitas, Fourth-year science
vs.
Ryan who has sweet velcro shoes
Do you think sharing is always the right thing to do?
Luiz: Yes.
Ryan: Yeah, it’s nice to share.
If you had a cookie would you give me half?
Luiz: Probably.
Ryan: Yeah.
Why should you say you’re sorry?
Luiz: Because you want people to forgive you.
Ryan: So you don’t hurt a person’s feelings.
