Toban Talkback

ISIC bonanza

Students flocked to sign up for ISIC cards on Monday as they officially became members of CFS. The International Student Identity Cards are one of CFS’ most-touted services; last week, they cost $16, but now they are free to all full-time students. The Toban asked: is this change welcome and why?

Chris McIlwraith, Third-year computer science

Did you vote?
No, I never really got around to it.
Why not, and why are you still getting your ISIC card?
Seeing as they’re already helping us out, there’s not necessarily a reason to vote yes; and seeing as it costs, like, $10 a year, there’s no real reason to vote no. So there’s no real reason to vote at all, I guess.

Brigitte Scheffer, Fourth-year commerce

Did you vote?
No, I didn’t. Why, I don’t really know why, I’m just busy.
Why are you getting an ISIC card?
I’m going to be going away — I’m going to England for second semester . . . you never know what kind of deals you might find, even here.
What do you think of the outcome of the referendum?
I have no strong sentiments . . . . It’s just good to have anybody supporting students, it’s always nice to have support; So if somebody’s trying to do something that makes [students’ lives] better, I’m all for it.

Tim Melnyk, Second-year arts

Did you vote? Why?
Yes — I voted because it actually felt like something I agreed with, to vote yes for this.
What did you think of the referendum campaign?
It seemed kind of one-sided, for sure; there wasn’t much of an opposition. But everything that I read about the “yes” campaign seemed to make sense and seemed to work in my mind.
Why are you getting an ISIC card?
Mostly it’s for the discounts, I’m not going to lie to you.
Is this an important CFS service?
No, probably not: it seems that, on the whole, [CFS is] saving the student body a lot more than the cost that is going into it — so certainly they’re providing many services, not just the discounts.

Rachel Gotthilf, UMSU Director of Internal Administration

Did you vote? Why?
Yes, I wanted to express my desire to become a member of the CFS.
Do you have an ISIC card?
Oh, that’s a good point, I should get one! I have been waiting to become a member of the CFS to get one.
