Desiree Scott receives honours as Canada West All-star, top rookie
With the first season of Bison women’s soccer in the books, the individual achievements are starting to come in. Last week, Desiree Scott was named Canada West rookie of the year and also named to the second All-Star Team. She recorded eight goals in 15 games for the herd, landing her in sixth place in scoring. Over the season Scott was named Bison Sports Female Athlete of the Week twice (Aug. 28 and Sept. 25).
Men’s volleyball returns home after split with Huskies
The Bisons returned home after opening the Canada West season with a split against the U of S Huskies in Saskatoon. After dropping their opening match Friday, Nov. 4, 3-1, the Herd was too much for the Huskies in the rematch Saturday night, with a 3-0 shutout. After taking the first two sets (25-22 and 25-18) the Bisons and Huskies played a marathon third set, each team determined to win, with the Herd prevailing 33-31. Joshua Klassen and Toon Van Lankvelt led the Bisons on the weekend with 35 and 37 points, respectively. The 1-1 Bisons host the defending national champions, the Alberta Golden Bears, Nov. 11 and 12.
Women’s hockey takes three of four points in Lethbridge
A strong power play helped the Bison women’s hockey team sneak out of Lethbridge last weekend with a win and tie against the Pronghorns. On Saturday, Nov. 5, the Herd skated to a 4-0 win with three goals coming with the extra attacker. Sarah Stebeleski had two of the power play goals, while Stacy Corfield recorded the shutout. It was the fourth straight game in which the Lethbridge team was held off the score sheet. The Pronghorns played with much more discipline Sunday afternoon, allowing only one power play goal in the second period, by Leanne Kisil. After 10 periods of shutout hockey, the Pronghorns Sam Schneyder ended the drought, beating Bison goaltender Heather Ash. Neither team was able to score again, and the game ended 1-1. The Bisons host the Regina Cougars at Max Bell Arena Nov. 11 and 12 at 7:05 p.m..
