Women’s Soccer
The Bisons dropped their eighth match of the season last Thursday, Oct. 20th with a 5-1 loss to the University of Victoria Vikes at University Stadium. Desiree Scott notched the lone Bison goal, her sixth of the year, while the team’s leading scorer, Caley Miskimmin, sat the game out. The Bisons’ record sits at 4-8-2, good for 14 points, with two games remaining in the regular season. They still have an outside shot at the playoffs, but must win their games this weekend versus Saskatchewan (Oct. 29 @ 12 p.m.) and Alberta (Oct. 30 @ 12 p.m.). Both games are at University Stadium and admission is free.
Men’s Hockey
After opening the season with a win and a tie, the Bisons were outscored 10-3 in two road games versus the University of Saskatchewan Huskies on Oct. 21 and 22, leaving them with a 1-2-1 record. On Friday night the Huskies led 4-1 after one period, on their way to a 6-2 win. The Bisons’ Chris Falloon had a goal and an assist for the herd in Friday’s game, while the Huskies’ goaltender Jeff Harvey made 36 saves to earn his first win of the season. On Saturday, the Huskies scored two goals in the third period on their way to a 4-1 win. Rob Smith had the lone marker for the Herd on Saturday. The Bisons will try to rebound this weekend when they host Alberta at Max Bell Arena on Oct. 28 & 29 (7:05 p.m.).
Women’s Volleyball
The unranked Bisons return home, sporting a 0-2 record after dropping both of their matches to the top-ranked University of Calgary Dinos. Despite the losses, the Bison squad should be feeling pretty good after putting a scare into the defending bronze medallists on Friday night. After falling behind two sets, the young herd fought back before falling in five sets 3-2 (25-22, 26-24, 14-25, 18-25 and 15-11). On Saturday the Dinos swept to victory 3-0 (25-15, 25-15 and 25-23). Outside hitter Amy Matthews led the herd each night with 13 and 11 points, respectively. The women face off against their cross-town rivals at the University of Winnipeg on November 4 at 7 p.m. and November 5 at 4 p.m.
Meanwhile, the team has named their only fifth-year player, Lindsay Poggemiller, captain for the second consecutive year. Last season, Poggemiller was named a Canada West second team All-Star; she led the team in kills (191), digs (188) and service aces (33).
Men’s Volleyball
The Bisons finished the pre-season on Oct 21-23 when they hosted the Swish Maintenance Invitational Tournament at the Investor’s Group Athletic Centre, winning all five of their matches to remain perfect. The successful tournament ends the herd’s pre-season with a record of 10-0. On Friday, the Bisons swept Montreal and Toronto in three sets. They had to work a little harder on Saturday before getting by York and McMaster 3-1, and then capped the weekend with a five-set win over Dalhousie 3-2. The Bisons open up the regular season in Saskatoon against the University of Saskatchewan Huskies on November 4 and 5.
Women’s Basketball
The first Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) rankings of the year saw the women’s basketball team sitting at number five. The Bisons are looking to improve upon their 11-9 record in 2004-05 and are off to a strong start, going 3-0 in their Garbonzo’s Invitational tournament two weeks ago. Last Saturday, they defeated Guelph 72-58. They open up conference play on Thursday at the Duckworth Centre versus the Wesmen at 6:15 p.m.
