Deniset honoured as student athlete
Bison hockey forward Paul Deniset was recently named a Top-Eight Academic All Canadian by Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS). Each year, the CIS selects one male and one female award winner from each of the regional associations, and Deniset was selected as the Canada West conference recipient. In order to be named an Academic All Canadian, a student athlete must maintain an 80 percent average while participating on a varsity team. Deniset was also selected for a 2005 Manitoba Foundation for Sports scholarship and the 2005 Mike Ridley scholarship. The Exercise and Sport Science student from Winnipeg was the 2004 Canada West player of the year and was selected to the 2004 CIS All-Canadian team.
Rookie kicker gets national attention
Peter Scouras booted his way to national recognition when he picked up the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) special-teams honour for his performance in the Bisons’ season-opening 51-10 win over the University of Calgary Dinos. He opened his rookie season on Sept. 3 by putting up 18 of the Bisons’ 51 points with four field goals. The rookie averaged 28 yards on six punts with a strong wind blowing through University Stadium. Scouras also received the special-teams athlete of the week honours for the Canada West. In the Bisons’ loss to the Huskies this past weekend, Scouras averaged 47.6 yards on eight punts and scored nine of the Bisons’ 21 points.
Bisons Name Captains for 2005
Bison football picked three offensive and three defensive captains for the 2005 football season. On offense, quarterback Ryan Zahara, running back Darwin Thompson and offensive lineman Riley Clayton received the honour, while linebacker Cory Huclack, safety Bob Reist and defensive lineman Matt Harper will represent the defense.
Women’s soccer also announced its captain for their inaugural CIS season. Nancy Feir will now be leading the Herd through the uncharted territory of the Canada West conference in the Bisons’ first season with official CIS status. The third-year Physical Education student has been a part of the Bison soccer program for the past three years and was the 2004 Most Valuable Player.
Men’s hockey to play Moose
Bison men’s preseason action will once again feature contests against the Manitoba Moose of the American Hockey League (AHL). This year’s exhibition games will be a home-and-home series, with the first game played Sept. 29 at 7:00 p.m. at the MTS Centre. The game at the “phone booth” is likely to feature Moose hopefuls and prospects, while the second game at the Max Bell Arena is expected to deliver a Moose team that represents AHL-calibre hockey. Game time for the second contest is 7:00 p.m. on October 4. Portions of the proceeds from these exhibition games will go toward the Bison men’s hockey scholarship fund.
