The University of Manitoba made its mark on the world as five Bisons competed for Team Canada at the 23rd Summer Universiade, August 11 – 21, in Izmir, Turkey. Bison track and field athletes Kristjan Hunter and Darolyn Trembath, along with former Bison decathlete Cliff Caines, accompanied coach Claude Berube to the World Games. Bison volleyball player and 2005 Canada West conference all-star Toon van Lankvelt was also in Turkey as a member of the Canadian volleyball squad.
After winning a bronze medal at the Canadian track and field championships, Hunter slashed 10 seconds off of his 3000-metre steeplechase time to finish in eighth spot at the Universiade. He also competed in the 5000m race in Turkey, where he finished 16th.
The Canadian men’s volleyball team lost a marathon match to Russia in their final game, winding up in 10th spot after finishing seventh at the last Universiade in 2003.
Looking to improve on his performance from 2003, former Bison Clifford Caines had a point total of 7343, taking sixth place in the decathlon competition.
Bison track and field coach Claude Berube was also in Turkey as Canada’s middle- and long-distance running coach, along with athlete Darolyn Trembath, who competed in the 1500m.
