Basketballer on elite squad

Bison basketball player Sarah Holder has earned the opportunity to play for the Out West Elite team this summer. The program selects top university and college players from Western Canada and gives them the chance to compete against teams in North America and Europe. Training at Mount Royal College in Calgary, Holder will travel to Europe to finish out the summer before returning to Winnipeg to suit up for the Bisons in the fall. Also on the women’s basketball radar screen this summer is Bison alumni Lynda Guy, who competed at the World Universiade for Team Ireland from August 11 – 21 in Turkey.

Bison football on a TV screen near you

For the first time in over 10 years, Bison football will be seen on television in Winnipeg. The homecoming game on September 24 will be broadcast by Shaw TV Manitoba and sponsored by the University of Manitoba Alumni Association. The game against the Simon Fraser University Clan will begin at 1 p.m. and will be available on channel 11 to Shaw cable customers.

Women’s volleyball announces recruits

After missing the playoffs last season, Bison volleyball will be looking for some new energy to make the program competitive in the Canada West conference once again. Two high school recruits have been added for 2005 — setter Mami Myiashita from Dakota Collegiate, and middle blocker Amy Schmidt from Silver Heights Collegiate. From Cochrane, AB, Melanie Brown, previously a member of Team Alberta, will also join the Bisons for the upcoming season. Finally, from the University of Winnipeg, right side hitter Amy Matthews will be joining the Bisons after a two-year stint away from the university volleyball scene. All players are expected to help the Bisons bounce back from a disappointing 2004 season.
