Hockey looks at home
There’s no place like home for Bison hockey this upcoming season. Both the men’s and women’s programs have announced the addition of new recruits, all with Manitoba connections. Four Manitobans, Kip Workman (Brandon), Rick Wood (Rivers), Jon Cara (Cartier) and Kyle Nichols (East St. Paul) will suit up for the Bisons, along with Steve Haddon who played for the Portage Terriers of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League.
The Bison women have also announced the recruitment of two homegrown talents in Stacey Corfield, a goaltender from Winnipeg, and Laura Tully, a blue-liner from Shoal Lake, Manitoba.
Golf swings into fourth, eighth
The Bison men’s golf team managed a fourth place performance at the Royal Canadian Golf Association’s Canadian University/College Championship, held June 7 to 10 on Vancouver Island, finishing eight strokes back of third-place Simon Fraser University. A young team on the women’s side managed an eighth place finish, with powerhouse UBC winning the championship for their third consecutive title.
Toogood to join sister
A recent qualifier for the Canada Summer Games, Julianne Toogood will join her sister Jennifer on the Bison swim team in 2005. Julianne qualified for several events at the Canada Games and recently set a senior national championship time standard in the 200-metre backstroke. She is also currently ranked 17th in the country in the 50-metre backstroke. Recently, Julianne competed in Montreal, at the World Aquatics Championships Trials, where the young swimmer finished in the top 25 in four events. Julianne will be looked upon to strengthen the Bison swimming squad along with sister Jennifer Toogood, who was the 2004 Bison womens swimming MVP.
Trembath, Berube prepare for games
In April, Bison runner Darolyn Trembath reached the 1,500-metre qualifying standard for the 2005 FISU World University Games to be held in Turkey this August. Unofficially, her time of 4:18.76 was the fastest female time in Canada at that point. While her performance does not automatically qualify her for the games, she needed to reach the standard in order to be eligible for the national team selection in July.
Bison track and field coach Claude Berube is also preparing for the FISU games after he was selected as a staff coach for Team Canada. The 2005 Canadian Interuniversity Sport women’s track and field coach of the year will be responsible for middle-and long- distance running during his first appearance at the games.
